Vancouver Island is a majestic haven of natural beauty. It features
both the coastal serenity of the Pacific and a vast wilderness waiting
to be explored. Victoria, the provincial capital of British Columbia, rests on the southern tip of Vancouver Island.
Affectionately called the City of Gardens, Victoria enjoys the mildest climate
in Canada. Victoria's natural beauty, abundance of recreation and world-reknowned attractions, make it the most popular tourist spot in the Pacific Northwest, and the number one destination in Canada.
Economy
The economy of Victoria is based primarily around tourism. A stunningly
floral place, Victoria has plants and bushes everywhere. The tourists
come by the millions each year; by ferry, plane, cruise-ship, and
helicopter. The city of Victoria beckons the peoples of the world with
grace and hospitality.
The inner harbour with its mixture of old world
architecture and modern attractions invites exploration
and discovery.
The quality of life in Victoria is excellent. A strong group of high-tech
companies in the region and numerous research facilities aid the development
of a growing information technology base. Between government researchers,
private entrepreneurs and academics, Victoria has successfully attracted
the elements of a sustainable high-tech hub.
Attractions
The British
Columbia Parliament Buildings are a magnificent feat of architecture.
Tile mosaics and elegant stonework make this building a landmark of
the community. Many consider the Parliament Buildings to be design architect
Francis Rattenbury's most important achievement.
Beacon Hill Park is a local
landmark worth an afternoon in the sun. The photo to the right is
just a fraction of the beautiful scenery available year round in the
park.
Victoria is also well known for its romantic Bed & Breakfasts, such as Humboldt House Bed & Breakfast.
The Butchart
Gardens is a splendid place that draws much visitor attention.
Nearly one million people visit each year, enjoying the floral beauty,
entertainment and lighting programs. The Butchart Gardens has established
an international reputation for the continuous display of flowering
plants. Each year over 1,000,000 bedding plants in some 700 varieties
are used throughout the Gardens to ensure uninterrupted bloom from
March through October.
